Beauty and the Beast
Contest Essay 22

The modern need for ancient myths is a cycle that will continue throughout time. In the past the myths were just that, but today some like that of Beauty and the Beast are an idealistic way around reality. Pitting the good against evil and always having a "hero" , if you will, to be there when all else fails is but a dream to most in todays society.

The fact that at one point Catherine was the typical human who goes through her daily life just existing and then one day is given another chance to look at life with a broader preception encourages me to believe that people can change for the better. Catherine not only sees beyond the outer layer of things but looks for the inner beauty of all things. Most people tend to believe that "what you see is what you get" but the myth of Beauty and the Beast reminds you to give people a chance, and that somewhere in all people there is a soul wanting to be loved.

As the years pass the context in which the myths are told may change over several times, and yet they will have the same underlying meaning. Rilke's is correct when he says there is a need for ancient myths in modern time, there will always be a need.
