Beauty and the Beast
Contest Essay 5

Ron Koslow took many key constructs of the traditional Beauty and the Beast fairy tale, such as the Beauty (Catherine) as hero(ine) or protagonist undertaking a series of challenges, a vision quest, that alters her perceptions and redefines her life; the Beast (Vincent) as the catalyst who drives the story and provides the focus for challenges and changes; and a duality of existence symbolized by both, who, through their shared destiny and transformations, become something far greater than they were. To this he creatively added his own unique attributes and retold the beautiful story, once again fulfilling the undeniable modern need for ancient myth; and in touching our hearts so deeply, he invited us to become a part of that extraordinary world and tradition.
