Our local public TV station played a lot of movies when I was a kid, and I can remember watching Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. It was the golden age of movies on TV and I drank it all in.
I didn't know then that Ginger was a vaudeville star from the age of fourteen! She started out with the famous Eddie Foy (but that's another movie musical). Then she worked with her first husband, Jack Pepper. (Get it? Ginger & Pepper?) Anyway, she was already a Broadway star by the time Hollywood studios came calling.
Although Ginger Rogers is no longer with us, we will always have her movies. It used to be you had to wait for a theater to run a film festival. One of the greatest things about home video is, though, you never have to wait.
It is a shame that of the 70-odd films she made, not even half have been released.
