Karl: I discussed the part of Nadia with Deana, and I explained to her this story where a young man [Tom] from Newark goes to war; he's going to die, his life is saved; he's now a vampire. He doesn't want to be a vampire, he just happens to be one now. He comes back and now he wants to go back to his old girlfriend - that he left behind. I really left it up to Deana, and I says, "How do you want to play Nadia?" Knowing very well that vampires have a tremendous sex drive, and one woman is not enough for them; she knows what he is and she knows that he keeps having to have these conquests of more and more women.
Jennifer (to Deana): So did you look at this as, "I'm involved with this dysfunctional guy"?
Deana: I tried to envision Nadia as being very romantic. Here's this guy coming back for her after being in the War. She thinks he's dead, when he shows up. You have to add that romance in there. They still love each other despite the fact that Nadia thought he was dead. I just kind of thought that in the 20s she would be a more loving, romantic type character. But also when she turns into the vampire, she's [rounding] up the other girls, to get away from him. I think she also had to be strong, because she knew he had to have other women but… when he didn't want these other women near him [it's because] he wants Nadia.
Jennifer: So she takes over.
Deana: Yeah… Nadia was like a queen to the other girls. So where I'm killing the security guard off, Nadia has to be the powerful one.
Jennifer: It really seems like the vampirism is second to him being an alcoholic. He's got his Johnny Walker and he's just cutting it a little with blood…
Deana: Tom is a vampire that didn't want to be a vampire; Nadia on the other hand just wants to be with Tom! So that's how I tried to play her. She loved him so she gave up being human to be with him. She didn't care, that's the romantic part…
Jennifer: So that's sad that she's following this guy, but he's going nowhere.
Deana: Right.
Karl: She says in the poem at the very beginning, "I am a rose, like him. His petals never fall. Ageless, timeless, nocturnal, now to be called Vampire." So she's saying, I've given up my entire life…
