It doesn't make your heart beat faster to think a place like this is being reopened, but it does give reason to believe that the area known as Bloomfield Center is not dying as a business district. Instead it's becoming home to new business owners and a more diversified clientele.
After being forlorn and empty for some years, a new set of letters suddenly appeared on the old marquee - Indian Films. I noticed this only by accident, while driving by one day and noticing out of the corner of my eye!
The new owners have not changed the exterior or interior, but have made a noticeable improvement in the look of the place. It is cleaner, brighter and in better shape than I've ever seen it. The seats are in good condition and the floors are clean. The walls have new paint, and there is a video monitor in the lobby that plays coming attractions reels. Aside from the usual snacks at the concession stand, you can also choose from two different flavors of kulfi.
The Center is located at 562 Bloomfield Avenue in Bloomfield, NJ. The theater screens films from India three times a day on the weekend, and also has one show each on Fridays and Mondays. There are currently no shows on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays.
Admission is $8 per person per show - that rounds out to about $2.50 an hour! Children under 6 get in free - now, who else offers that anymore???
The Center plans to begin showing films with English subtitles by early spring of '97. Call the theater at 201-743-3338 for an update.
