...had to worm his way into the hearts of Indian cinephiles, but he
eventually won enough leverage to put out his own films, such as
DHARMATMA in 1975. Khan admits his father resisted the idea his
son Feroz needed regular doses of horse operas and adventure serials
- he would have preferred a lawyer in the family. After his father
died, Khan's mother had to sacrifice what little of an estate they had
to make ends meet. Meanwhile Feroz took to poolhall hustling for
quick money, waiting to break into one of the 700-odd films a year
generated in major centers like Bombay. Filmistan Studio made him
a contract player, and he began to specialize in the fantasy/action
genre. He picked up tips along the way, in stunt work and filmic
effects, even with outdated equipment. Winning the Filmfare Award
gave him the nerve to strike out on his own. His second feature,
DHARMATMA, was shot partly in Afghanistan. It was almost held
up by a coup, until the new leader gave Khan his personal
approval!
