The Bros
A note from Steve:
I only saw a clip of these guys in action in a documentary once, but they blew me away. Beyond simple entertainment, the Nicholas Brothers completely bypassed the difficulties faced by Astaire and Kelly, who had both demanded
that shots of their dancing show them full-length. The Brothers couldn't be contained by any kind of shot, so the exhausted cameraman would just hope he could keep up with them as they rampaged over the set, the nearest piano, each other! They didn't n
eed 3-D, they *were* 3-D! Right now, only a few of their classic numbers have been preserved on video:
Orchestra Wives
(1942) What's Jackie Gleason doing playing bass for Glenn Miller's band? That and other trivia-quiz questions will be answered in this nostalgia trip, highlighted by hits like "I've Got a Gal in Kalamazoo." The Brothers break in on the developing roman
ce long enough to perform a single specialty act.
98 min., B/W, $19.98
Sun Valley Serenade
(1941) Sonja Henie, Milton Berle and Dorothy Dandridge make a lively mix for the Nicholas Brothers to jump into, and they all somehow manage a cross-country trek to the tune of hits like "In the Mood" and "Chattanooga Choo-Choo."
86 min., B/W, $19.98
While Fayard was on Broadway, Harold was in a big reunion film, brimming with old-fashioned musical talent:
Tap
(1989) Gregory Hines has the time of his life in this breezy story of a hoofer who just can't "reform." Sammy Davis, Jr. made his last appearance along with songstress Etta James, Joe Morton, Sandman Sims and other longtime professionals.
110 min., Color, PG-13, $14.95
