LSD says "Eat me" in

"Alice in Acidland"

The Janus-Headed Dodgson/Carroll

Charles L. Dodgson, M.A. could do pretty much anything if he set his mind to it. He even made a preliminary drawing for Sir John Tenniel, of Humpty Dumpty, which shows up in the pencil sketch collection Tenniel's Alice, a 1978 collaboration betwee n the Harvard College Library and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Dodgson, primarily a mathematician, was the Martin Gardner of his day. His puzzles and recreational calculations were printed as monthly columns, often disguised as riddles or narrative poems. Pillow Problems and A Tangled Tale is the 1958 two-for-one Dover reprint of his 19th century collections, still available in paperback.

Alice
(1988) Stop-motion master Svankmajer makes the best of sense. Watch out for those crawling steaks.
85 min., Color, $29.99

Alice in Acidland
(1968) John Donne's freaky trip loosens a college girl's inhibitions.
feature length, B/W & Color, $20.00

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
(1972) Notoriously slow John Barry musical is nevertheless a must for fans of Michael "Phantom" Crawford and old Goons like Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan. Dudley Moore probably plays the Dormouse, but don't b et the farm.
96 min., Color, Rated G, $19.99

Alice in Wonderland
(1933) The entire Paramount roster was slotted into the tale, with Gary Cooper as the White Knight and Cary Grant the Mock Turtle. Pretty and stately.
77 min., B/W, not available

The Alphabet Conspiracy
Jack Warner produced this 50s doc from Bell Science on a bizarre yet appropriately handled subject: linguistics! Hans "Dr. T" Conreid is the Mad Hatter with a friend named Jabberwock.
56 min., Color, $9.95

Disney's Alice in Wonderland
(1951) Ed Wynn and Sterling Holloway sing classics like "I'm Late" and "The Unbirthday Song."
75 min., Color, $24.99

DreamChild
(1985) Jim Henson helped on this Dennis Potter project, an odd set of flashbacks besetting the now octogenarian "Alice," who had inspired Dodgson in her youth, on a PR tour of New York.
94 min., Color, Rated PG, $14.99

Go Ask Alice
(1972) Cuz she's 10 feet tall. Look for Charles Martin Smith while you're at it. A TV movie, but a fierce one.
73 min., Color, not available

Jabberwocky
(1977) Palin co-wrote his own vehicle -- a muddy, misty, ramshackle thing much like Time Bandits. Time Out called it a portmanteau film!
100 min., Color, Rated R, $19.99

Labyrinth
(1986) Bowie is King Goblin, who steals a baby, as goblins are wont to do. The child's older sister must make her way through a Wonderland-inspired maze to rescue him. Written by Terry Jones, with George Lucas overseeing the operatio n, and Jim Henson providing more Muppets and Muppetteers. Gets lost in thought at times, but brilliant to behold.
101 min., Color, Rated PG, $14.99
