Dean Swift

Tradition goes on

in "Nobody's Fool"

Anglo-Irish Jonathan Swift was always ambivalent about his ancestry, and too sardonic to wave the flag for anyone in parti cular. His political satires often came wrapped in folkloric packages, but what's more, he became a folk hero of sorts himself.
"Dean Swift" and his notoriously truculent, procrastinating -- but ever clever -- servant Jack, figure in jokes and variat ions on international legends. Many are retold in Dr. Daithi O hOgain's encyclopedia of Irish folk tradition, Myth, Legend and Romance (ISBN 0-13-275959-4).
Paul Newman's character Sully in Nobody's Fool, is Jack all over again. After p unching a cop in the nose, for trying to flag his truck down on the sidewalk, Sully grumbles to his lawyer how he never earns his legal fees. The lawyer, exasperated, shoots back, "How can I get you out of jail when you won't even go *in* yet?"

Gulliver's Travels

Gulliver's Travels Beyond the Moon

Nobody's Fool
(1995) When AOL recently announced it would offer a Gen X entertainment site, they promised they wouldn't put this up because it was for old people. Get real! This film is so smart even Melanie Griffith dropped the dumb bunny act . This film is so funny, you'll want to tell everyone you meet about the false leg, but you won't so you don't ruin it for them. This film is so hip it's got Paul Newman -- who's an old man -- playing an old man and don't you forget it. This film is so on the ball even Bruce Willis toes the line. The makers dedicated their work to the late Jessica Tandy, who plays Sully's surrogate mom.
(Out now, priced to rent)

The 3 Worlds of Gulliver
(1960) The Ray Harryhausen/Bernard Herrmann version, always loads of fun.
100 min., Color, not available
