Hedgies!

Our mascot --
I love the Irish!
Don Prickles!

We found this little doll (above) in the gift shop at The Harp and Bard of Clifton, NJ, which is why it's holding a shamrock. The name-the-hedgie contest was won by Pam Moore and family, who get to keep the real stuffed animal (a Russ).

Tons of folks sent possible names for this wee bit o' fluff, using Irish, Greek, German and even American Indian words! There were lots of fun puns (of course) like Stonehedge, Sam the Sham-rock, and Aaron Go Bragh. Lots of entries were real names for pet hedgehogs. There were also joke names, the best of which was from one who must be in-the-know: "Ticke Me and I Roll Up and Hiss" Elmo! That was suggested by Chris Hoffacker.

Thanks to everyone who entered! It was a nice break from the grind of running an online video store to say all those great names out loud...

By the By: We only put up this page because we're fans, not as pet owners. Lucky for us our contest caught the attention of Nancy Johnson, hedgie owner and webmaster of Under The Hedgerow. She suggested the following resource for those who want or have just gotten their first hedgehog as a pet: IHFS (The International Hedgehog Fanciers Society) and a current Hedgehog FAQ.

Sometimes we also get rumors! Here's one we hope pans out:
"I just thought I would share that I heard that the next Disney full length animated feature, after Hercules, will be Holly the Hedgehog. I can't be certain of this information, since I got it from the clerk at a candy store, but I am excited for its release, anyway."
Yeah, that should make up for it not having been Hercules the Hedgehog!

Hedgehogs got a reputation for stealing milk right out of the cow when you weren't looking, but they are actually fine -- if fleabitten -- friends to British gardeners. It seems they would actually rather snack on pesky slugs. Slurp! We couldn't find any hedgehog movies to list, but you never know if someone might remake Night of the Lepus, and just dump the rabbits. Call it The Prickly Terror of Twickenham, maybe. One of Jim Henson's relatively shortlived television series retold, among other tales, the classic "Hans the Hedgehog," but this is not on tape at present.

Grooming! However, they are featured in the Andy Wyatt's "adult" cartoon:
Beastly Behavior
A hedgie makes a cameo in this science-based satirical docucartoon. It's nature in action -- au naturel -- and unbelieveably all true!
Color, animation, appx. 45 min., not rated, $19.95

Entries will be considered in terms of humor and originality. Any submission that overloads the server or cannot be processed by the email form script will be disqualified. A last check will be made of all official entries after midnight, March 9th and the decision made and posted on /rbf12.html as soon as possible afterwards. The Picture Palace is not responsible for blank, incomplete, misdirected submissions, or entries not received or inaccessible due to human error, conditions on the Internet, acts of God or online service providers. Illegible (garbled) or incomplete email and forms will be disqualified. The prize is guaranteed to be awarded, no substitutions cash or otherwise will be made. The winner will be notified by return email. Acceptance of the prize will constitute permission (except where prohibited) to use the winner's name and/or statements for publicity purposes without further compensation. Employees and their immediate families connected with The Picture Palace are ineligible. All international, federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Void where prohibited by law. The winner will be posted at URL:/ in mid-March, 1998. If you've just lost a beloved hedgie, you can post a free epitaph at The Pet Cemetary. By the way, can you trust a hedgehog for financial information?
