Wales

Assimilation has always been a touchy subject for the Welsh, and books like R. A. Griffiths' Conquerors and Conquered in Medieval Wales (ISBN 0750905158) deal with the consequences of Norman influence. And Shall These Mute S tones Speak? (ISBN 0708311601), by Charles Thomas, catalogs inscriptions on ancient public art in south Wales and adjacent English territory. Meanwhile, John Steane also covers these areas in Archaeology of Medieval England and Wales, publishe d by Croom Helm in 1984. More fanciful subjects are given scholarly treatment in J Gantz' translation of The Mabinogion, the collective name of traditional Welsh mythology.

Modern day Welshmen are not so escapist if you take these two features i nto account, one done in the native Gaelic dialect:

Coming Up Roses
(1986) Dafydd Hywel stars in this satire about a darkened movie theater used for the next best thing to vegging out: growing mushrooms!
93 min., Color, Rated PG, Welsh with English subtitles, not available

Dragonslayer
(1981) This sword-n-sorcery tale was shot on location in Wales and other British sites, with a mostly British cast supporting star Peter MacNicol.
108 min., Color, Rated PG, $14.99 on video, $29.99 for CLV laser and $39.99 for widescreen laser.

Rebecca's Daughters
(1991) We didn't let the factual roots of this story keep us from putting it in as a crossdressing costume drama. Nothing stirs a girl's heart like a swashbuckling swish -- or is Joely Richardson's character just tragically confused? Original screenplay by Dylan Thomas.
97 min., Color, not available
