The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey
(1988) This Australian/New Zealand co-production snagged 6 national "Oscars" and 12 other international awards. Britain of the 1300s is choked with the Black Death, so a bedraggled family has fled to the icy no
rth. Conor has returned from a visit back home with no good news, but his little brother has been experiencing visions, which demand that a proper offering be made. The boy's guiding image, of a new spire on a distant church steeple, inspires the men to
dig through the earth, in search of the site upon which they may forge and hoist a celtic cross. But like the fabled tunnellers to China, they wind up on the other side of the planet -- six centuries in the future. Production design team led by Sally C
ampbell accomplished the impossible -- a fervent, sweeping period/scifi
epic on a low budget. The dialogue is a bit hard to follow for American
ears, but the story is fully carried by action and imagery.
