Orlando Awakes

Orlando
(1992) A satirical fable in a class by itself. It took Great Britain, Russia, France, Italy and the Netherlands to summon the financial and technical wherewithal to pull off the only Virginia Woolf adaptation ever braved. Tilda Swinto n effortlessly leaps epochs and gender lines as the title character, who begins life and the film as a wanna-be Shakespeare, and is still going in the 20th century as a single mom by the end. Quentin Crisp plays Queen Elizabeth. The laser copy is unfortu nately as dark as the video, so certain night shots have lost their detail, but this is a minor technical fault to an overall wonder; with a lovely choir led by Jimmy Somerville.
93 min., Color, $19.99

Yikes! If you really, really want your own autographed copy of Orlando, someone says he's got one! It would be cheaper just to get Trivia #22, still on sale wherever they carry tonier journals, containing an article comparing "Jurassic Park" and "Orlando" by you-know-who.
