(1964 aka OLD SHATTERHAND) Lex Barker, Guy Madison, Pierre Brice. One of many exciting euro westerns made by Barker in the mid 60s. A boundry scout discovers the ward of an Apache chief has been framed for murder by an unscr upulous cavalry officer who wants to start an Indian war. Color. SW02

BEYOND THE LAW

(1967) Lee Van Cleef, Lionel Stander, Gordon Mitchell, Antonio Sabato. Lee starts out as a thief, but eventually becomes sheriff. He battles his former outlaw buddy Mitchell over the theft of a valuable shipment of Silver. Good tasting spaghetti with plenty of flavor and a dash of excitement. Color. SW06

COMPANEROS

(1970) Jack Palance, Fernando Rey, Franco Nero, Tomas Milian. A terrific "political" western with a rousing music score and a brilliant cast. A mercenary helps a revolutionary rescue a pacifist professor and his followers. Palance i s great as a wooden-handed killer who lost his hand when he was nailed to a cross (the hand was only freed when his pet hawk ate it off). Color, from 16mm. SW15

GRAND DUEL*, THE

(1973) Lee Van Cleef, Peter O'Brien, Jess Hahn, Horst Frank. More top of the line spaghetti thrills as Lee plays a mysterious gunman who plays the protector of a young, gun slinging ruffian who's falsely accused of murder, even tually bringing him face to face with the desperados who framed him. GUN FIGHT AT RED SANDS

(1963, aka GRINGO) Richard Harrison, Sara Lezana, Giacomo Rossi Stuart. A landmark western in the history of Italian cinema. Even before Leone's Eastwood trilogy, this film successfully introduced the notion of an avengin g stranger to the genre. Harrison plays the dark, brooding hero, fresh from the revolutionary war in Mexico. After learning his family has been attacked by a gang of ruthless bandits, he returns home and sets out for revenge. Color. SW01

GUNMEN OF RIO GRANDE*

(1964) Guy Madison, Fernando Sancho, Madeleine Lebeau, Garard Tichy. Trouble breaks out in a Mexican mining town just south of the Rio Grande. Wyatt Earp is summoned to help clear up the lawlessness. From 16mm. SW09

IT CAN BE DONE AMIGO

(1971) Bud Spencer, Jack Palance, Renato Cestie, Dany Saval. A western casanova seduces the sister of a tough gunfighter. The gunfighter gets wind of it and comes after him. Look out! There's a nice touch of wit attached to the proceedings. SW11

LAST TOMAHAWK, THE

(1965) Anthony Steffens, Karin Dor, Dan Martin, Joachim Fuchsberger. This West German/Italian production is a very colorful and action packed reworking of Cooper's LAST OF THE MOHICANS. Lots of pitched battles. Color. SW04

MASSACRE AT MARBLE CITY

(1964) Mario Adorf, Brad Harris, Horst Frank, Dorothy Parker. During the gold rush, a rancher is killed by bandits disguised as indians. The son of the murdered man gets the local sheriff and the indians to help track do wn the murderers. A sprawling, well done spaghetti western. SW08

PLACE CALLED GLORY, A

(1966) Lex Barker, Pierre Brice, Marianne Koch. The setting is Glory City, a town that treats gun fights like big, public events. All the townsfolk turn out to see them. Barker helps battle a gang of ruthless, bloodthirst y outlaws. Color. SW05

UGLY ONES, THE

(1969) Richard Wyler, Tomas Milian, Ellas Karin. A top-notch spaghetti western! A woman is torn between the two men she loves: a bounty hunter, and the fugitive outlaw he is hunting. She commits her affections to the outlaw onl y to find out what kind of low scoundrel he really is. Recommended. Color, from 16mm. SW14
