The Yamato An unearthly glow... Collection

New Releases!

Uchu Senkan Yamato began the saga in 1974. This science fiction series was created by animator Leiji Matsumoto (also responsible for Captain Harlock) for Japanese television. Yamato, a 6th Century name for Japan, was reborn as a 22nd Century spacecraft. The storylines and major characters now suggest the Star Wars films, even though the Yamato projects predates that trilogy. Producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki now says he was influenced by the oil shortages which plagued the developed world at the time, and wanted to create a superhero with a sense of wonder about the universe and the future, not just a strongman.
The 26 episodes were condensed into a feature film in 1977. A sequel called "Arrivederci Yamato" was an even bigger hit. Fueled by this success, another series was commissioned, of another 26 episodes, for broadcast between 1978-79. That season capped with a feature-length episode called "The New Voyage."
A big publicity bash was staged for the next film, "Be Forever." An ocean liner was revamped to look like the Space Battleship by the producer, as a floating ad, for the premiere!
Star Blazers was chosen as the American equivalent. Susumu Kodai became Derek Wildstar and his superior, Jyuzo Okita, was renamed Captain Avatar when the shows were repackaged in the US. The release of this 1979 series began successfully, but not all three sequences were completely shown by the mid-80s on US television stations. A backlash had set in, and broadcasters resisted carrying Japanese-made children's shows.
Meanwhile, the Yamato movies got lost in the shuffle... until now!
The American series has been collected in its entirety, now available gift-boxed in three chronologically-arranged sets. Each set contains six tapes with thirteen shows in each set. These collector's items listed below are for the die-hard fan who needs to see the mostly unbroadcast conclusion sequence, "Bolar Wars." These tapes are uncut, real-time dupes from new masters, with reproduced English dubbing, and musical soundtrack by Hiroshi Miyagawa. Star Blazers animation won raves from Starlog, Ares and Newsday.
