I blame my folks for getting me hooked on movies, even though they still don't understand why I didn't go into the family business - real estate.
They took me to a railroad museum and had to hunt me down when I stayed behind in an exhibit to watch Buster Keaton's The General.
My dad showed me the Jose Ferrer version of Cyrano de Bergerac when it came on TV. As a matter of fact, he made me watch it even though I whined at first!
Soon enough I was glued to the tube; not because I had nothing else to do... it was serious stuff for me.
Now I'm on the verge of my 40s and realize the child is father to the man after all.
After taking a BFA at Syracuse University I took various jobs in the industry, editing some independent films for the notorious Earl Owensby and coordinating ad spots for William Estes. I tried to break into cable during its early years, but got tired of hashing out deals and making pilots.
By then the home video industry was taking off, so I worked my way up through the ranks of retail and into wholesale. I worked for Tamarelle's and Facets, well known for bringing new and different works to video. I also started Canterbury Distribution for a California company.
After that the next step up was working for a label. But even though Mystic Fire had an interesting mix of titles, it still just wasn't as much fun as being able to pick and choose from thousands of projects.
Now I have my own company at last and can focus on the people and things I think are fun and unusual. I also get to support companies that share my appreciation for pop culture. Chief among them is Jukebox Radio, a local station that plays my kind of music and comedy shows.
